About the eLearning Course

The EU Non-proliferation and Disarmament eLearning Course was designed, developed and launched by the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium and funded through the EU Council Decision CD 2014/129/CFSP of 10 March 2014.

The course covers all relevant aspects of the EU non-proliferation and disarmament agenda and aims to provide a comprehensive knowledge resource for practitioners and scholars interested in arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament of both conventional and unconventional weapons. We are continually working on keeping the course up-to-date.

About the EU Non-Proliferation Consortium and PRIF/HSFK

The EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium is a joint venture of four European research institutes. It was established in 2010 by the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique (FRS, Paris), the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS, London), the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), and the Leibniz-Institut Hessische Stiftung Friedens- und Konfliktforschung / Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (HSFK/PRIF).

The core mission of the Consortium is to establish and promote a European network of independent non-proliferation think tanks in support of the implementation of the EU Strategy against the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction.

The European Union funded the Consortium through two Council Decisions adopted on 26 July 2010 (CD 2010/430/CFSP) and on 10 March 2014 (CD 2014/129/CFSP). One major task of the CD 2014/129/CFSP is to promote non-proliferation and disarmament education both through on-site training and through distance learning (eLearning).

PRIF/HSFK is the institute within the Consortium responsible for the implementation of these educational projects.

About the Implementing Team

Throughout the years, several different people worked on the project and helped putting it forward. Thus, the following list may not be complete.

The original EU Non-proliferation and Disarmament eLearning Course was designed and developed by Giorgio Franceschini and Harald Mueller, Marco Fey and Niklas Schoernig. Learning units 1 to 15 were first published in 2017. Since 2018, Niklas Schörnig has been project manager and sole publisher.

Sascha Dieter, Paulina Hiersch, Nico Lueck, Thea Riebe, Yannick Schillinger, Alena Widder, Tobias Sofke, Freya Zöhrens, Hans Goerdten, Frank Kuhn, Claudia Sachelaru, Finja Filzinger, Rolf Brocke, Max Köhler and Lilith Schmidt were responsible for the technical implementation of the eLearning course, i.e. for web development, software engineering, graphic design and video post-production. Filming, video post-production and graphic design was provided by Gregor Brinkmeier and Artur Kazun (Goethe University Frankfurt, studiumdigitale) as well as Bastian Goetz (FORMart) and Anja Feix (Grübelfabrik).

David Weiß (studiumdigitale) further developed and implemented the adaptation of the software LernBar for this eLearning Course.

The European Security and Defense College (Jochen Rehrl) provided quality control and supported the testing of the eLearning course, whereas the Interdisziplinäre Kolleg Hochschuldidaktik of Goethe University Frankfurt (Claudia Bremer) helped in developing the didactical concept and provided project supervision and eLearning consultancy.

Between 2021 and 2022 five new Learning Units were added (16 to 20).
